Zurich – The City of Lakes and Mountains

Zurich – A City You Simply Cannot Miss in Europe
Zurich was never on my travel bucket list, yet destiny led me there—and I will forever cherish that experience. Like every other flight, I leaned against the window, expecting the typical views of a European city. But the moment we descended, Zurich revealed itself in a way I had never imagined. The city’s natural charm—shimmering lakes, the majestic Alps in the distance, and green hills and mountains all around—left me absolutely spellbound.
What added to the magic was the warmth of Swiss hospitality, which embraces you the moment you land at Zurich Airport—locally known as Zurich Flughafen. At immigration, I even managed my first Swiss-German words: “Danke, Ciao!” (Thank you, goodbye)—a small but proud moment of blending into the culture.
Getting Around Zurich

Transportation is often a concern for travelers in any new city, but Switzerland sets the gold standard. Its rail system is a marvel of punctuality and efficiency, making every journey seamless. I chose to take the train from the airport to my hotel near Zurich Hauptbahnhof (the Main Station).
Settling by the window, I was captivated by the passing scenery—sparkling rivers, serene lakes, rolling hills, and an architecture that beautifully balances history with modernity. The journey was quick and convenient: just 15 minutes and CHF 8 later, I was at the heart of Zurich.

Zurich Hauptbahnhof itself is a world of its own—a stunning architectural masterpiece bustling with life. Packed with restaurants, shops, tourist offices, and even open late into the night, it truly feels like the city’s heartbeat. Interestingly, while commercial activity in Zurich winds down by early evening (around 7 PM), the station remains alive, welcoming travelers from across Switzerland and Europe. No wonder Switzerland consistently ranks among the top three nations in the world for quality of life and happiness.

Here’s a tip for families: if you’re traveling with children, investing in a Swiss Family Pass is worth every penny. Not only does it cover most transportation and excursions, but children under 16 travel free with parents—making it both economical and stress-free.
Now, let’s explore what Zurich has to offer!

Top Attractions in Zurich

1. Bahnhofstrasse – The Iconic Shopping Street
Stretching between Paradeplatz and the Main Station, the Bahnhofstrasse is one of the most famous shopping avenues in the world. Here, you’ll find luxury boutiques like Bucherer, renowned for exquisite Swiss watches and jewelry, as well as popular Swiss grocery chains like Denner and Coop for everyday essentials. Don’t miss the delightful chocolates and artisanal cheeses that make Switzerland irresistible.

2. Paradeplatz – The Financial Heart of Zurich
Zurich is consistently ranked among the world’s most expensive cities, a reputation rooted in history. During the turmoil of World War II, Switzerland remained neutral, drawing Europe’s elites to Zurich. Over time, this created a hub for global finance and high-end living. Today, Paradeplatz is the epicenter of Swiss banking, where institutions like Credit Suisse and UBS dominate the skyline.

3. Old Town (Altstadt) – A Walk Through Time
Zurich’s Altstadt is where history and modern vibrance blend seamlessly. By day, it charms with narrow cobblestone lanes, centuries-old architecture, and cultural landmarks. By night, the area comes alive with lively clubs, cozy restaurants, and boutique shops. Notable highlights include visits to the historic Grossmünster and Fraumünster churches, both jewels in the city’s cultural crown.

4. Fraumünster Church – The Women’s Church
Founded in 853 by Emperor Ludwig for his daughter Hildegard, Fraumünster—literally “Women’s Church”—is one of Zurich’s most treasured landmarks. The three-aisled Gothic basilica, adorned with stained-glass windows designed by the legendary Marc Chagall, attracts visitors from around the globe.

5. Grossmünster Church – A Symbol of Zurich
Overlooking the River Limmat near Lake Zurich, Grossmünster is another architectural gem. Built in Romanesque style, this Protestant church is one of the city’s four great medieval churches, alongside Fraumünster, Predigerkirche, and St. Peter. Its twin towers have become iconic symbols of Zurich’s skyline.
Final Thoughts

Zurich is far more than a financial hub—it’s a city where natural beauty, history, and modern living coexist in perfect harmony. From the calm of its lakes to the liveliness of its Old Town, every corner has a story to tell.

A Romantic Getaway to Maldives

The Maldives is the perfect setting for a honeymoon or a romantic escape. From the moment we landed at Velana International Airport, the turquoise sea welcomed us. We took a speedboat to our overwater villa, where glass floors revealed colorful marine life beneath.

Days were spent snorkeling, dolphin watching, and indulging in spa treatments. Candlelight dinners on the beach, with waves gently kissing our feet, made the trip unforgettable.

This blog explores resort options, best time to visit, and how couples can make the most of their Maldivian adventure on a budget.
